Is 10k steps a day actually doing anything for fat loss or is it just a fitbit thing

F34, 68kg, desk job. I have been hitting 10k steps most days for about 6 weeks and tracking food at roughly 1650 kcal. Down about 1.8kg which is fine, but I genuinely cannot tell if the steps are doing anything or if it is just the food.

The watch says 10k steps burns like 400 calories. That seems high? If I am going to spend 90 minutes a day walking I want to know it is not just making me hungrier.

Should I keep doing it or would that time be better spent in the gym.

The watch number is probably too high but the steps are not the point. Steps work because they are the easiest way to stop your body from quietly cutting activity when you diet. People in a deficit fidget less, stand less, take the lift more. A step target stops that drift.

You will not feel it as "burning calories". You will notice it as the diet continuing to work in week 8 when it usually stalls.

Ok that framing actually makes sense. I was expecting to feel it like a workout.

Anecdote: I lost 8kg last year and the only two things I changed were tracking food and 9-10k steps. Never set foot in a gym until month 4. The steps were the difference between "diet works for 3 weeks" and "diet works for 3 months". Make of that what you will.

Both. The steps are not instead of the gym. 2-3 lifting sessions plus the steps is the combo that keeps muscle while you lose the fat. If you drop the steps for the gym you will probably stall again.

Does it make you hungrier though? Genuine question, walking does nothing to my appetite but running makes me want to eat the fridge.

Walking no. I did one week of jogging instead and yes, absolutely, I was starving by 4pm every day.

I do 7k and it works fine for me. 10k is a round number not a magic one.
