Intermittent fasting for fat loss

Fasting is a calendar. If you eat the same calories in six hours or in sixteen, the fat loss matches. People like 16:8 because they skip the breakfast they were mindlessly eating.

Use it as a fence

If a noon-to-8pm window stops night cereal, keep it. Hit protein inside the window. Do not “earn” a binge at 7:30 because the clock said you were allowed.

When it backfires

Heavy lifters who train at 7am and refuse to eat. Hormones and sleep already messy. If the window makes you worse, drop it. The blueprint can use three normal meals.

A window that does not wreck training

If you lift at 6pm, do not start eating at 7pm and call it discipline. Put protein near the session. An 8-hour window can work. A 4-hour window plus a hard squat day is how people get dizzy and then raid the fridge at 10.

Fasting is a schedule. The blueprint is still calories and protein. Use the window if it makes the schedule easier. Drop it if it makes you obsessed. We will still sell you the meals either way.

Skipping breakfast only works if lunch is real

16:8 often works because people delete a mindless breakfast and do not fully replace it. If you skip breakfast and then eat a 900-calorie lunch plus a 900-calorie dinner plus snacks, you fasted and stayed the same size. The window is a fence. The total is the job.

Hit protein inside the window. 30-50 g at the first meal so you are not white-knuckling until 4pm. Fasting plus a salad first meal is how people raid the fridge at 7:30 and call the window broken.

Build lunch like it has to carry half the day's protein. 40-60 g is common if you only eat twice. That looks like a big bowl, not a cafe salad. People who fast and then listen to hunger at noon often under-eat protein and overeat whatever is fast. Write the first meal. The window does not assemble it for you.

Protein inside the window, not after it

If the window is noon to 8pm, lunch and dinner have to carry 1.6-2.2 g per kg. That is a lot of food in two sittings for some people. Add a planned yogurt or shake inside the window. Do not save protein for a time the clock has already closed.

A Look Like Us meal plan can use three normal meals if the window makes you worse. Fasting is optional logistics. Protein is not optional if you want the weight you lose to look like fat.

If two meals cannot hold the grams, the window is too tight or the foods are too low-protein. Widen to 10 hours, or add a third sitting inside the same fence. Pride about a 4-hour window is not a physique. 140 g of protein in 8 hours of normal food is. Adjust the clock to the grams, not the grams to a screenshot of someone's 20:4.

Early training and an empty stomach

A 7am lift with no food is a preference some people tolerate. Others get dizzy, then overeat at noon. If you train early and refuse to eat, at least take protein soon after. A 4-hour eating window plus a hard squat day is how people feel heroic and then wreck the evening.

Put protein near the session. An 8-hour window can still work if the session sits near an open meal. Do not collect fasting badges at the cost of the lift you came for.

Some people do well with black coffee and a lift. If you get shaky, eat 20-30 g of easy carbs or a small yogurt and stop collecting fasted-training points. Strength work is not cleaner because you suffered. If evenings are when you overeat, an early session plus an early first meal can still be a fence. Empty is optional. Finished sets are not.

Fasting is a calendar, not a hormone hack

Eat the same calories in six hours or in sixteen and fat loss matches over time. The interesting part is behaviour. A noon-to-8pm fence can stop night cereal. It can also create a binge at 7:30 because the clock said you were allowed.

If cycles, sleep, or mood fall apart, eat breakfast again. That is common sense, not a political position. This is education. A clinician gets the vote if fasting is colliding with a medical issue.

Use a window that matches your life: work lunches, family dinner, training time. A window that deletes dinner with your household will not last. Social meals matter more than a 16-hour streak. If fasting makes you more obsessed with the clock than with the plate, drop it. You can lose fat with breakfast. Plenty of people do.

FAQ

What is the best fasting window?
The one that removes the calories you did not need. There is no magic hour.
Can women fast?
Some do fine. If cycles, sleep, or mood fall apart, eat breakfast again.
Is 18:6 better for fat loss than 16:8?
Only if it removes more calories you were not using. A tighter window is not a stronger fat-loss spell. It is a tighter schedule. Pick the one you can train and socialise on.
Can I drink coffee during the fast?
Black coffee is fine for most people who use fasting as a calorie fence. A large creamy coffee is a meal. If the splash of milk keeps you from eating a pastry, it is still a better trade than pretending the pastry was fasting.
Should I fast on rest days only?
You can. Some people find it easier to skip breakfast when they do not train. Keep protein on those days. Do not use rest-day fasting as a punishment for a Saturday meal.
