Night shift nurse. When do I even train?

Three 12.5 hour night shifts a week, 7pm to 7:30am, usually Mon Tue Wed but it moves. Off the other four days but the first one is basically a write-off because I am sleeping until 3pm.

I want to lift 3x a week. Right now I am doing it randomly when I feel awake, which means about 1.5x a week in practice.

Anyone else on nights? What did you settle on? Train before shift, after, or just on days off?

ICU, nights for 6 years. Here is what stuck:

  • Never after a night shift. I tried. It is garbage and you are more likely to hurt yourself.
  • Before shift works if you eat after. Gym at 3:30pm, done by 4:30, eat, shower, go in at 6:45. Tired by 3am but I was tired anyway.
  • Days off: train on day 2 and day 4 of your off days, not day 1.

So: before shift on one of the work days, then two sessions on days off. That is your 3. Some weeks it is 2. That is fine.

"Never after a night shift" I needed someone to just say that. I have been trying to be a hero at 8am and it is awful every time.

Not a nurse but I did rotating shifts in a warehouse for 3 years. Full body 3x beats a split for shift workers because when you miss a day you do not lose a body part for 10 days. Anything that assumes a fixed weekly schedule will fall apart.

Are you eating properly on shift though? My friend is a nurse and she basically lives on vending machine stuff from midnight to 6. No amount of gym scheduling fixes that.

Not great honestly. I bring food but by 3am I am eating whatever is at the station. Working on it. One thing at a time.
