Guides/BMR vs TDEE
BMR vs TDEE
BMR is the calories you would burn in bed. TDEE is the calories you burn in your actual life. If you eat at BMR and still go to work, you are in a hole you will not stay in.

Which one to use
Set meals from TDEE. A cut is TDEE minus a bit. A bulk is TDEE plus a bit. BMR is a building block inside the calculator, not your lunch target.
Why people get this wrong
Fitness apps love showing BMR because it is a small, scary number. Ignore the scare. Use the full-day estimate, then confirm with weeks of weighing.
A worked example
Say BMR prints 1600 and TDEE prints 2300. Eating 1600 while you walk to work is a crash. Eating 1900-2000 is a cut. Eating 2300 is hold. Eating 2500 is a small bulk. The labels on the app do not matter. Which of those you meant does.
Use our calculator, pick the TDEE line, then take the quiz so the meals match the choice. Do not eat BMR because it looked “disciplined” on a screenshot.
BMR is rest. TDEE is the whole day.
If you eat at BMR and still go to work, you are in a hole you will not stay in. That sentence is the article. The rest is people arguing with a bedtime number.
See calorie-cycling if you want different days. See maintenance if you want to hold a look. Both start from TDEE, not from BMR theatre.
A printed example you can steal
BMR 1600, TDEE 2300. Eating 1600 while you commute is a crash. 1900-2000 is a cut. 2300 is hold. 2500 is a small bulk. The app label does not matter. Which of those you meant does. Do not eat BMR because it looked disciplined.
Meals come from the daily number
Cut is TDEE minus a bit. Bulk is TDEE plus a bit. BMR is a building block inside the formula, not lunch. Apps flash BMR because it is small and scary. Use the full-day estimate, then vote with weeks of weighing. More muscle raises BMR some. Not enough to cancel pastry. Lift anyway.
Rest days still have a life
Eat closer to TDEE, or cycle only if you planned it. See calorie cycling if you want different days. See maintenance if you want to hold a look. Both start from TDEE, not bedtime theatre.
FAQ
- Does more muscle raise BMR a lot?
- Some. Not enough to cancel a daily pastry. Lift anyway, for the look.
- Should I eat BMR on rest days?
- No. You still have a life on rest days. Eat closer to TDEE, or cycle only if you planned it.
- Why does my watch show a tiny BMR?
- It is estimating rest. Your day is larger. Diet against the daily total, not the bed number.
- Can I eat BMR plus steps only?
- That is still usually a deep hole. Prefer TDEE minus a modest amount.
