TDEE calculator explained

TDEE is everything you burn in a day: sitting, walking, training, fidgeting. A calculator guesses it from age, size, and activity. The scale tells you if the guess was polite or optimistic.

Use it as a start line

Pick a conservative activity level. Most people over-tick “active.” Eat the number for two weeks. Then you have data. That is how you stop arguing with a formula.

Then make a decision

Cut, hold, or small surplus. A blueprint turns that decision into meals and a week of lifting. The calculator is the door, not the house.

After you have the number

Put it in a note. Subtract 300-500 if you want to lose fat. Add 200 if you want to grow and you are already lean enough. Then eat that for two weeks and let the average scale vote. The calculator’s job is over. Yours starts.

A blueprint uses the same kind of number, then turns it into meals so you are not doing mental maths in a supermarket aisle. Use the tool, then stop living in the tool.

Treat the printout as a range, then run a two-week vote

Tick a conservative activity level. Most people over-tick active. Eat the number for fourteen days. Average the morning scale. If you drop, the guess was high or you moved more than you thought. If you rise, the guess was kind. Adjust 150-200. That is how a TDEE calculator becomes a number you own.

Two apps will disagree. Different formulas, different fudge factors. Argue less. Vote with the average. The calculator is the door. The scale is the house.

Do not eat the workout twice

If the activity multiplier already assumed you train, do not also add the watch’s burned calories back onto dinner. Double-counting is a classic stall wearing a fitness-watch halo.

After you have a voted number, decide cut, hold, or a small surplus. A blueprint turns that decision into plates. Stop living in the tool. Open it again when weight, job, or training changes a lot.

TDEE is the whole day, not the bed number

BMR is rest. TDEE is sitting, walking, fidgeting, training. You diet against TDEE. Eating at BMR because it looked disciplined on a screenshot is a crash. See the BMR versus TDEE guide if that mix-up is how you started.

Use the calculator on this site, write the number, then take the quiz so the meals match the choice. The formula’s job ends. Cooking starts.

FAQ

Why do two calculators disagree?
Different formulas and different activity fudge factors. Treat them as a range.
Should I eat back workout calories?
If they were already in the activity multiplier, no. Double-counting is a classic stall.
Why did my TDEE drop after I lost weight?
A smaller body burns a bit less. Recheck after a big cut. Steps and training also move the number.
Can I use last year’s TDEE?
Only if your weight, job, and training look the same. If they do not, vote again.
